Clinical supervision: A vital support for nurses and midwives
Clinical supervision can support your professional health and wellbeing and is a vital part of professional self-care.
In 2024 the updated Position Statement: Clinical Supervision for Nurses and Midwives by The Australian College of Nursing, the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses, and the Australian College of Midwives was released.
Clinical supervision provides a safe, structured space for nurses and midwives to:
- explore workplace challenges
- reflect on their practice, and
- strengthen their professional identity.
The position statement encourages nurses and midwives to engage in clinical supervision. It urges employers to embed the practice as a core workforce strategy, as it can attract new recruits and help retain staff while supporting the wellbeing of their teams.
Nurse Midwife HPA does not provide clinical supervision, however we are strong supporters of the practice and encourage nurses and midwives to explore how this can help them navigate the complex work we do.
